Chapter Twelve

Vance

I LEANED BACK IN MY seat, a big-ass smile on my face as I took in everything that had just happened. A matchmaker? It was perfect—I couldn’t think of anything better in the world to help me find the woman I was looking for. It might not have been conventional, but it was no different than using a corporate headhunter to locate the perfect member of staff for a particular job. Right?

Maybe it was that attitude that had led me to needing one in the first place. Either way, I wasn’t going to spend more time than I had overthinking it. She was offering me a service, and I sure as hell needed to take advantage of it.

“So, what do you need to know?” I asked her as she reached for her glass of wine and took a sip. I wondered how a woman like her, someone who already had a career, had ended up serving drinks for me at that party, but I didn’t question it. Maybe people didn’t meet her monetary standards or something, or maybe she was trying to get her new business off the ground here first.

“That makes sense,” she replied, and she grabbed a napkin beside her, pulled a pen from her bag, and started making some notes. I was glad she seemed to be taking this seriously—I needed someone who I could trust, someone who would do everything that needed to be done when it came to this. I wanted to make sure I had hired the right person for the job and that I hadn’t made some stupid mistake. I was sure, though, from the way she was conducting herself that she knew what she was doing. I would have to check out her credentials later on, but right now, I was just glad to have someone who seemed to be able to take the stress of this whole thing off my shoulders for a little while.

“Yeah, I want to find someone I can marry by the end of the year,” I continued. “Do you think that’s doable?”

“It’s a big ask, that’s for sure,” she muttered, making notes on the napkin and narrowing her eyes at them as though she was putting together calculations to ensure she was getting all of it right.

“But I think I can manage it, if we work quickly,” she continued. “Who was the woman you were with
